X-rays from Open Clusters
نویسنده
چکیده
The present state of X-ray observations of cool stars in co-eval open clusters is reviewed. Concentrating on ROSAT results for solar-type stars, the available observational dataset is summarized along with those details of the evolution of X-ray activity of low mass stars which have been firmly established as a result. Observational questions which are as yet unresolved are then addressed, including the origin of " super-saturation " and whether observations of one cluster can represent the X-ray properties of all clusters at the same age. The role of high spatial resolution X-ray imaging as a tool for identifying cluster members is highlighted and the prospects for future developments with AXAF and XMM are discussed.

A brief overview is given of X-ray observations of old clusters. Most X-ray sources in old open clusters are interacting binaries, formed via evolution of a primordial binary, and emitting X-rays because of magnetic activity; however, a sizable fraction of the cluster sources is not well understood, including some of the most luminous ones. Globular clusters appear to contain fewer magnetically...
متن کاملX-ray sources in old stellar clusters: the contribution of ROSAT
Two new bright X-ray sources in globular clusters, and many less luminous ones in globular clusters and in old open clusters, have been discovered with ROSAT. Accurate positions obtained with ROSAT help identification with optical objects, which however is still very incomplete in globular clusters. One dim globular cluster source has been identified with a recycled radio pulsar; several others...
متن کاملThe Birthplace of Low-mass X-ray Binaries: Field versus Globular Cluster Populations
Recent Chandra studies of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) within early-type galaxies have found that LMXBs are commonly located within globular clusters of the galaxies. However, whether all LMXBs are formed within globular clusters has remained an open question. If all LMXBs formed within globular clusters, the summed X-ray luminosity of the LMXBs in a galaxy should be directly proportional to...
متن کاملX - Ray Observations of Globular Cluster
A ROSAT HRI X-ray image was obtained of the open globular cluster NGC 288, which is located near the South Galactic Pole. This is the first deep X-ray image of this system. We detect a Low Luminosity Globular Cluster X-ray source (LLGCX) RXJ005245.0−263449 with an X-ray luminosity of (5.5± 1.4)× 1032 ergs s−1 (0.1–2.0 keV), which is located very close to the cluster center. There is evidence fo...
متن کاملEgret Upper Limits on the High-energy Gamma-ray Emission of Galaxy Clusters
We report EGRET upper limits on the high-energy gamma-ray emission from clusters of galaxies. EGRET observations between 1991 and 2000 were analyzed at positions of 58 individual clusters from a flux-limited sample of nearby X-ray bright galaxy clusters. Subsequently, a coadded image from individual galaxy clusters has been analyzed using an adequately adapted diffuse gamma-ray foreground model...
